Abstract
This article aims to describe the collective ethos in Papuan folktales. Folktales are part of oral folklore. Oral literature has a variety of functions in the life of a collective, namely as a means of entertainment, education, social criticism, and containing messages laden with local wisdom. Through folklore we can learn about the ethos or distinctive worldview of a society where the folklore has developed from generation to generation. Based on this background, this research was conducted to (1) find out the collective ethos; and (2) local cultural values in Papuan folktales. The method used in the research is a qualitative descriptive method with the aim of describing the research object based on the facts obtained. The data sources for this research are Papuan folktales and information obtained directly from informants. This research uses psychofunction theory. This theory is used to reveal the collective ethos and cultural values in Papuan folktales. The results of this research reveal the collective ethos of the Papuan people which is reflected in the Papuan folktales.
