Abstract

This research aims to analyze the reinterpretation of semiotics in the anthology of Pulau Buru folktales with a focus on symbolic analysis. The type of research is descriptive qualitative with a semiotic approach. The type of data is library research based on the book "Anthology of Pulau Buru Folktales," published in 2019. Data was collected through documentation techniques, by collecting and reading folktales from the "Anthology of Pulau Buru Folktales" book. Additional data was obtained through interviews with cultural experts and local community members. The data analysis technique of this research involves identifying, classifying, and reinterpreting symbols and meanings using Ferdinand de Saussure's theory.

The results of the research show that the symbols in the "Anthology of Pulau Buru Folktales" book reflect cultural values, a harmonious relationship between humans and nature, and the morals of the Pulau Buru community. These reflections include (1) local hero stories, symbolizing bravery/wisdom and altruism; (2) legends of mountains and plants, symbolizing relationships with sacred places and local flora; (3) natural legends, symbolizing nature; (4) ritual practices, symbolizing traditional rituals; (5) moral stories of the community, symbolizing moral values and ethics.

Thus, this research not only contributes to the study of semiotics and folklore but also offers a new perspective on the importance of preserving and maintaining cultural heritage in the face of globalization challenges.
