Abstract

The Kajang Tribe of Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, has pre- and post-funeral customs known as Kelong Basing. Kelong Basing is done to reassure the relatives who have been left behind, encouraging them to have patience and understanding that all people will eventually be reunited with their homeland. The land is revered as a "mother" that needs to be honored and is a location where harmony with the environment can be developed. Finding ecocentrism values in the Basing kelong of the Kajang tribe is the goal of this study. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. Ecology literature studies is the research method used. The Basing kelong song by the Basing singer and the findings of interviews with the Kajang tribe community and traditional leaders served as the research's data sources Data was collected through interviews, observation, recording, note-taking, and literature. The data is explained based on the Kelong Basing text which has been translated into Indonesian. The text was transcribed and transliterated to find messages and meanings related to ecocentrism values. The research results found three ecocentrism values ​​in the Basing kelong of the Kajang tribe, namely human life with land which is the source of life, human life to apply the importance of being with nature, and human life to be patient with disasters to obtain happiness and tranquility in this world and the afterlife. It can be concluded that the Kajang tribe, through their kelong oral tradition, has consistently inherited harmony and simplicity in living life with nature.
