Abstract
Novels as records of human ups and downs which are perceived through personal experience are interesting objects for research. This research aims to determine and describe the Hierarchy of Needs of the Main Characters in the Novel Saga dari Samudra by Ratih Kumala. This research uses a literary psychology approach. The data source was obtained from the Novel Saga from Samudra by Ratih Kumala which focuses on the main character, namely Jaka Samudra (Raden Paku). The data in this research is in the form of dialogue or narrative excerpts that are in accordance with Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of humanistic needs. Data collection was carried out using techniques. Meanwhile, the analysis uses a deductive method which includes understanding, clarifying, analyzing, synthesizing and concluding the character's psychology based on certain analytical theories. The theory used by researchers is Abraham Maslow's theory. The results of this research obtained 7 data, namely 2 data on physiological needs, 1 data on security needs, 1 data on love and belonging needs, 1 data on self-esteem needs and 2 data on self-actualization needs.
